Good quality veg box suppliers will carry a Soil Association number or mark. On the left is the stamp that appears on the side of each of my veg boxes. It is the Soil Association logo – UK’s most trusted and recognisable mark for organic produce. It guarantees that the food associated with it has been produced to strict environmental standards.
So what exactly is the Soil Association?
The Soil Association was started over 60 years ago by a group of farmers, scientists and nutritionists. These specialists had observed how farming practices influenced the health of plants, animals, humans and the environment. They formed the Soil Association to develop standards of organic farming and campaign for safer, healthier produce and production methods.
Way back in the 1940s the Soil Association was questioning the use of insecticides such as DDT in farming. Today they are the UK’s leading environmental charity promoting sustainable organic farming and championing human health. Their objectives and campaigns have grown to cover a wide range of farming and food issues. You can read all about these in the ‘About Us’ and ‘What We Do’ sections of their website. If you want to know more about the Soil Association’s rules for organic farming – including information on alternatives to chemical weed and pest control – you can find their Standards Guide here.
